"Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich man's world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich man's world
Aha-ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
It's a rich man's world"
"I wanna be a billionaire so fuckin' bad.
Buy all of the things I never had.
Uh.
I wanna be on the cover of Forbes magazine,
Smiling next to Oprah and the Queen."
The main topic for the sermon today was "Consumerism VS Contentment".
"Everyone’s toil is for their mouth, yet their appetite is never satisfied.
What advantage have the wise over fools? What do the poor gain by knowing how to conduct themselves before others?
Better what the eye sees than the roving of the appetite. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind."
-Ecclesiastes 6:7-9
(1) Recognise that I will always desire for more (v7-8)
Even J.D. Rockefeller (first American worth more than a billion dollars), when asked what was enough, replied, "Just a little bit more..."
We are wired to 'desire' more, we're created in God's image for excellence (Genesis 1:26)
However, we should not be judgmental of others, so that others don't feel guilty when they're wealthy.
BUT, when 'sin' enters the picture, the balance is tipped.
We end up pursuing more for self-satisfaction, and this affects our relationship with God and people; we end up allowing things to possess us!
Always ask yourself, "Am I able to live simply?"
Just because we can afford it does not mean we must have it! :)
(2) Focus on enjoying what I already have (v9a)
Enjoy the present instead of enjoying what we wish to have.
Don't be like a dog chasing its own tail - the faster it runs, the faster the tail goes.
Contentment is the anecdote to consumerism.
