In line with reading a passage, 'The Penfriend', I showed students a video of Ryan Halligan, a 13-year-old victim of cyberbullying who committed suicide. (Video can be assessed here.)
With the current technology, bullying is not confined to the school premises.
Bullying follows the victim 'home'.
My main message to my students was for them to be careful who they 'befriend' online, and to be careful what they say/do online; And of course, for them to no be a bully - "Do unto others what you want others to do unto you."
Always put yourself into the other party's shoes before you do anything...

Adjective Chain
Instead of teaching grammar the usual way (i.e. drill and practice), I made use of a game 'Adjective Chain' (credits to the 'All about English' team from Pearson Education South Asia Pte Ltd!)
Anyhow, the game goes like this...
(1) Get the entire class to stand up.
(2) Students would be called out at random.
(3) Once called, they have to provide an adjective each before they are allowed to sit down. [The adjective must be a word that describes a person's physical appearance, personality or feelings (focus of this activity)]
(4) (Catch to this game is that) the adjective provided must begin with the last letter of the adjective given by the previous student. [Challenge students by having them give an adjective that belongs to a different category from the previous word.)
I made use of mywebspiration to 'record' the words as the students give them:

What touched me most about this class was how they thought for each other and helped each other with the words; all to the very last point when there was only one boy standing, and they helped him give a word in unison.
Appreciate their great display of class spirit! :)

'Have you grown up or just older?'
"IN A few days' time, we're going to leave 2010 behind and welcome a brand-new year.
At this juncture, I would like to pose a question to everyone: "Have we grown a year older or have we grown up by a year?"
Readers who have been following my column would know that I love to embellish my "viewpoints" with stories which I have read. This piece is no different! Take the story of an 87-year-old woman, Rose, who was determined to pursue a university education.
She enrolled in a university and - because of her bubbly personality and affable demeanour - quickly became the campus icon, making friends easily wherever she went.
Rose's sense of humour, coupled with her love for dressing up, went down very well with her much-younger peers.
When invited to speak at the annual football banquet, she gave a memorable and inspiring address.
She said: "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.
There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success. "You have to laugh and find humour every day. You must also have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.
"We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! "There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are 19 years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will still turn 20.
"If I am 87 years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything, I will still turn 88.
Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability.
The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change.
"Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets."
Rose died one week after her graduation, and over 2,000 students turned up at her funeral to pay tribute to the wonderful woman who taught them by example that it is never too late to be all you can possibly be.
Although I never knew Rose personally, reading this inspirational story has certainly stirred up the somewhat-complacent giant in me.
And, being a music man, I can appreciate what Rose meant when she challenged the people around her to live out the lyrics of The Rose, a heartrending ballad made famous by Bette Midler.
The second verse of the song goes: "It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance.
"It's the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance. "It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give.
"And the soul afraid of dyin' that never learns to live."
This reminds me always to take the bull by its horns and live life with passion - passion fuelled by a determination to find opportunity in change.
May next year signal the start of a new journey for you and me, a journey during which we "grow up" more than we "grow old".

When I read this article, it brought to my mind this picture I saw when travelling in Canada.
My caption for this photo on Facebook reads, "I'm growing old, but I'm not too sure if I'm growing up. I think I'm still pretty much a kid."
What struck me the most about this article was the idea of having no regrets; Life is about not having regrets for things you did not do, and not about things you did.
Just yesterday evening, Grandpa exclaimed when he learnt that I'd registered for Class 2B license.
I must admit I was a little taken aback, considering how into bike-riding my family is - my dad, brother, uncles ride bikes!
And then Grandpa said that I wasn't young anymore, he was worried I'd have psychomotor problems with a bike! :|
Anyhow, I am only 23 (going 24), and really, if not now, when?
I have procrastinated the registration for my 2B License since 2008; I finally registered for it on 31st December 2010, when two other teachers went to register for their Class 3A.
I believe I wouldn't regret learning another skill, but I'm sure I would regret if I do not get it. ;)
We only have one life, live it.
The change that you want to see in your life, lies in your hands.
The world can judge, but only we can decide for ourselves what they should see.
Ms Tay never said it would be easy, Ms Tay only said it would happen only if you try.

Just one more try
"Today, I have a question for you.
We all know who invented the light bulb, Thomas Edison. But the question is, how many times did he try before he succeeded?
I'm going to tell you the final bit of his success.
It was the 21st of October 1879. Thomas had been working non-stop to make a cotton thread filament. The filament had failed twice and he did not want it to fail again. Sweat trickled down his throat as he switched on the new light bulb. It's burning... But for how llong? Thomas dozed off as it burnt.
On the 22nd of October 1879, it carried on burning. It burnt for thirteen hours and thirty minutes and stayed alight. He did it! After five thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine failures, he had finally done it!
Thomas Edison succeeded in inventing the light bulb because he did not give up and that brings me to the quote of the day,
We had once give up before, right? When we give up, we simple put away the situation and leave it, never to be solved. That is what Thomas Edison was trying to say, don't give up. When we give up in life, life will never be successful. You will not prosper in life. If Thomas Edison gave up, someone else would have invented the light bulb and won fame and glory. We will never hear about Thomas Edison. Same for us, always try one more time.
Remember, our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.
Do bear that in mind. I wish everyone, especially the Sec 4s and 5s all the best for your finals. Hang in there!"

"Choosing a life partner...
...is one of the most important decisions to be made in life. What factors will affect your choice?" was one of the questions in the Sec 4/5 Mid-Year English Paper 1.
I met a small group of a graduating class last week to do a review of their paper 1, and they in turn posed that question to me. =.=
Well, I'm supposed to write an entry of it, composition style; but nah, I'm not going to.
Cuz seriously, if I were a student sitting for my O Levels, I would stay away from such a question, far far far far farrrrrrr away. Really.
Why?
Cuz factors in choosing a life partner are subjective, as the saying goes, "One man's meat is another man's poison."
I gotta admit though, that got me thinking...
Some of the factors I overheard were along the lines of - looks, monetary worth, bodily curves and such.
Yes, they matter but to what extent?
And, aren't such factors a tad too superficial?
All these can be changed with time.
Not happy with your looks? Go under the knife.
Don't feel rich enough? Work smart and hard, earn more money, spend less, save more.
Feel outta shape? Head to the gym and get yourself worked out, oh and watch your dietary intake.
I thought about some factors that I would be concerned about and I think it boils down to these:
1. Family
2. Friends
3. Chemistry
I must agree with how he treats his family, cuz that would definitely reflect how he would treat mine. He should then also be comfortable with how I treat my family and how I should treat his. Most importantly, his family has got to love me and my family love him. At the end of the day, -touch wood- should anything go wrong, my family would be my pillar of support. Then again, if he were my life partner, I'm sure we'll brave through thick and thin together, as pledged in wedding vows...
Next, I must be able to hang out with his friends and him with my friends. I believe a marriage would be enhanced with group gatherings. :) In addition, I must feel safe and assured when my spouse heads out for his men's nights out just as much as he should feel when I head out with my girlfriends' for ladies' nights! ;)
Last but not least, chemistry with each other. I feel that chemistry between two people do not come by easy. With chemistry, everything would fall into place. Both parties would feel comfortable with each other, be able to think for each other, be able to make each other happy no matter the situation.
I remember a colleague asking me once, "Who would you choose - someone you love or someone who loves you?" I would choose the former, I would choose to be with someone I love for the rest of my life than be with someone who loves me for the rest of my life. Of course, finding someone whom I love and who loves me would be perfect!
Whatever it is, I remember this from somewhere... "I'd rather not marry than marry the wrong man." No?

Alice in Wonderland
Went outta watch Alice in Wonderland with a selected group of students late this afternoon.
It's their first trip out and with everyone from different classes, so they were all quite excited.
When we entered the theatre, a handful of them were calling out, "Ms Tay! ... Ms Tay! ... Ms Tay! ..." from around me.
Cuz I teach/taught 4 out of 5 Sec 1 Express classes and so most of the 23 students know me... =.=
Luckily for me, everyone settled down proper when the movie started. :)
I like such an experience/feeling and hope to do this again! :D
Wanted to go get the book but it's all sold out at Page One. :(
Walked around a bit and ended up in The Face Shop cuz I wanted to get eye gel.
I ended up with more than what I wanted to buy, but I'm a happy 'cher! :D
Just used the products - eye gel, toner, moisturiser - a while ago, I'm lovin' them!! :)

Communicate!
What's the purpose of speaking a language?
To communicate.
So even though I am going to teach English, I think it is fine to speak Singlish.
BUT we need to know how to code-switch - use English and Singlish at the right setting. :)
In the meantime, enjoy this video! ;)

Why English is so hard to learn
"We must polish the Polish furniture.

The farmer used to produce produce.
The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
The soldier decided to desert in the desert.
This was a good time to present the present.
A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.
When shot at, the dove dover into the bushes.
I did not object to the object.
The insurance was invalid for the invalid.
The bandage was wound around the around.
The was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.
They were too close to the door to close it.
The buck does funny things when the does are present.
They sent a sewer down to stitch the tear in the sewer line.
To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
The wind was too strong to wind the sail.
After a number of injections my jaw got number.
Upon seeing the tear in my clothes I shed a tear.
I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?"

'European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".
In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy.
The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.
In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.
Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.
Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.
By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

How not to say I Love You!
Did a task in English class.
"I love you." is a sentence with a simple main verb.
After a modal auxiliary is added, the meaning changes.
So, we were to explain the meanings by adding a clause to the sentences.
Here's what we came up with...
I may love you but I am not very sure.
I might love you if I thought about it.
I can love you if I make the effort to.
I could love you if circumstances were different.
I will love you for the rest of my life.
I would love you until the end of time.
I shall love you after you have slimmed down.
I should love you but I don't.
I must love you because you're my husband.
I have to love you because we've been married for 15 years.
I ought to love you because you saved my life.
